    When your wound is healing, it goes through multiple phases of recovery. The color tends to change a lot, too, especially when the scab is in the middle of forming. Usually, the crust that forms is dark red or brown. This is due to the hemoglobin in your blood. But a yellow scab is a clear sign of infection.

    Depending on how old the wound is and its current condition, you can easily contract an infection. Plus, in most cases, an older scab will get darker as time passes before falling off. If it develops a thin layer of yellow on top, with a ring of red around the skin, it is an indication that something is wrong. In such cases, do not brush the wound away. Visit a specialist as soon as you can to prevent the infection from spreading to other areas of your body.

    Causes of Yellow Scab on Wound

    One of the biggest identifiable traits of a scab is the thick, dark crust that it develops. However, sometimes, the scab doesn’t form as it should. Either the color or the texture of the crust can change. If the scab on your wound is a pale yellow instead of the typical brown, it could be due to impetigo or cold sores.

    Impetigo is a skin infection that commonly affects wounds, causing discoloration and pus formation. However, impetigo is benign, and it tends to go away on its own, too, so it isn’t something to worry about. But if you would still like an expert’s opinion, consult a professional just in case.

    On the other hand, cold sores come to be because of the herpes simplex virus (HSV). These sores appear around the lips and have pus inside of them. This can cause a weird tingling and burning sensation.

    How to Treat a Yellow Wound

    The best way to care for an infected wound is to avoid getting it moist. Keep it away from water, and make sure there is no skin-to-skin contact. Try to be as gentle as you can. No matter how tempting it may be, do not scratch away the scab forming on top. Instead, if it must be cleaned, use a clean washcloth to cautiously wipe away at it. Once you’re done, make sure to sanitize immediately.
